Conkey Cruisers

Conkey Cruisers is a non-profit community bicycling program founded in 2012 by Theresa Bowick in Rochester, NY. The organization's mission is to promote a more active and healthy lifestyle among neighborhood residents, particularly youth, through bicycling. Operating primarily out of Conkey Corner Park, the program provided free access to bicycles, safety equipment, and organized rides, earning recognition such as the President Obama Active Lifestyle Award+. The program was noted for its community engagement and efforts to overcome local challenges, including bike thefts and safety concerns on local trails. Although the original program was scheduled to conclude in July 2022 after a decade of service, the organization's legacy and community involvement continue through related initiatives like the "Conkey Cruisers Offseason Cruisers" and the "Bike Bank" initiative, which supports local educational and community centers. The program successfully fostered a more bicycle-friendly culture in Rochester.
