Between the Miles: Why Riders Keep Choosing Grassroots Gravel

It’s time. You’re finally here: race weekend.

You step into the bustle of bodies, bikes, and expo booths at Grassroots Gravel in Pueblo, Colorado and immediately notice something feels different.

There’s a warmth to the atmosphere. A sense of connection to everyone who’s part of this thing.

The volunteers checking you in are excited to hear where you’re from and what you’re riding. Riders around you are swapping plans for the day. First-timers are picking up tips from experienced racers. Pros wait in the same lines, part of the same conversations. Veterans share stories from a long season.

It feels easy to be here.

There’s no barrier to entry. No pressure to prove yourself. Just an open invitation to show up and ride your ride.

And that feeling doesn’t happen by accident.

You won’t find much elitism here. And that’s by design.

From the way Grassroots Gravel shows up in the world to the way riders are welcomed on-site, everything points back to the same idea: this is a space for people.

Chances are you’ve crossed paths with the Grassroots Gravel crew before race day. Maybe at another event. Maybe at a workshop or a community ride.

Chances are it was Adam, the founder, and chances are it wasn’t a quick interaction. It was a conversation.

That genuine interest in people sits at the core of Grassroots Gravel. Sometimes it looks like a quick check-in. Sometimes it looks like stopping to help someone build confidence fixing a flat tire. When people feel capable, they show up differently, they ride differently, and they come back.

More Than a Weekend of Cycling

What you’re feeling on race weekend didn’t start here. It’s built throughout the year. Grassroots Gravel shows up in the community with repair workshops, skills sessions, and rides that prioritize connection over pace. It’s about helping people learn the basics, build autonomy on the bike, and feel like they belong in the space. That work extends beyond the bike itself and it matters.

Grassroots Gravel partners with local volunteer fire and rescue groups and supports organizations working to make cycling more inclusive and accessible. From supporting the people who keep these rural roads safe to creating entry points for riders who haven’t always seen themselves in the sport, the goal is the same: take care of the community that makes this possible.

It’s not something you necessarily see on the surface, but you feel it. Because when riders arrive at the start line with confidence, the entire experience opens up. They’re not just surviving the day. They’re part of it. And that’s a big reason people choose to return.

You’ll meet first-time racers here. You’ll meet riders who had their first race at Grassroots Gravel and never stopped coming back.

You’ll also meet elite riders who keep showing up. Not because they have to. Because they want to. Because Grassroots Gravel feels like what events are supposed to be.

The roads are great. The support is there for every rider at every pace. The people behind it are genuinely excited to share the experience with you. And then there’s Pueblo.

The Steel City of the West carries an identity that’s bold, a little gritty, and full of character. History, art, local businesses, and food all blend into something that feels real. The people of Pueblo show up for one another, and they’ve embraced Grassroots Gravel as part of their community. That person who checked you in probably thanked you for being here, and they meant it. That person was likely part of the local volunteer fire department or one of many nonprofits the event supports each year. Grassroots Gravel means something to everyone bringing it to life, and it matters in a real way to the community and region. Pair that with phenomenal riding and local flavors when you get back, and you get a place that sticks with you.

You’re going to leave this weekend feeling something. Maybe it’s the people you met. Maybe it’s the confidence you built. Maybe it’s the simple realization that you belong. Whatever it is, it’s going to stay with you longer than the finish line.

When registration opens again, you won’t just remember the miles. You’ll remember everything between them. And you’ll make the same decision so many others have.

You’ll choose to come back.
