Gary has been a cyclist, both recreation and racer, his entire live, as well as a backcountry skier, CrossFit athlete, and instructor, NASM certified trainer, and owned several businesses including a marketing business specializing in event signage, banners, and tent displays.
He began this site as a blog about all aspects of cycling, called Colorado Avid Cyclist. In the spring of 2024, a life-altering event reshaped Gary’s purpose, and this site’s. After he was struck from behind by the driver of a Ford F-250 in Castle Rock, Colorado, we saw how cyclists are often viewed as less than human on the road. Minutes after the crash, while paramedics were attending to him, we witnessed the driver’s callous response on social media, posting photos of the scene and making slanderous comments, revealed a deep-seated dehumanization of cyclists. This incident, coupled with the tragic death of another cyclist and the ensuing online vitriol, ignited a new mission.
After covering several deadly motor vehicle/cyclist crashes, he published an essay: “Somebody’s Husband, Father, Son, and More: The Dehumanization of Cyclists,” that went viral, resonating with thousands and sparking a movement. This pivotal moment transformed Colorado Avid Cyclist into a platform for advocacy, which encouraged him to expand this site into a national resource and platform to promote the cyclist lifestyle.
